HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF ZANZIBAR POLICE COLLEGE

Zanzibar Police College (ZPC) is located at Ziwani area – Unguja Island in Zanzibar. It was established during the British colonial domination in 1956. The Institution was known as Zanzibar Police Training School (ZPTS) and its main purpose was to train Police Officers in order to serve the colonial regime. In 1963 the British handed over the administration to the Sultanate of Zanzibar.

The Sultanate Regime was removed in the Zanzibar 1964 Revolution but the training programs at the college were not changed until 1981 when in–service training courses such as proficiency was introduced in order to conform to post-independent standards and the changing crime trends. In October 1985, the college started to conduct Promotional courses for lower cadres of the Rank & File officers (NCOs), Refresher courses as well as specialized courses.

ZPC obtained a Registration number REG/PWF/035, issued by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) on 29^thOctober, 2009. It also started to offer courses in Technician Certificate (NTA level 5) in Police Science in 2010/2011 and was granted full accreditation on 17^th September 2014. The college reaffirms its accreditation after every five years where by the last will terminate on 17^th September 2024.
